So a while back when I was determined to figure out watercolors despite previous failed (horrendous) attempts at the media. I came across a couple youtube videos where people used india inks to paint their flash/paintings instead of watercolors. I didn't know much about them at the time and while I was busy buying some watercolor color pencils I went ahead and bought a Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India Inks set of 7 inks; a mouthful I know. Anyway, when my order came in I immediately took to the watercolor pencils. It seemed like the solution to all the troubles I had with watercolors in the pans or straight out of the tubes. I could just color normally and then go over with water to get the effect I was looking for.
I was pretty content with my watercolor pencils and I even managed two paintings with them: the King of New Orleans chest piece and the Skullflower painting. Now there were still things I didn't quite like about watercolor. The biggest thing that bothered me was that when you went over a base color with a new color the water in the new color reactivated the one you put down and they mixed. And the more you layered your colors the more you ended up with this muddy mix of colors instead of the layers shining through one another.
Well a little while ago I was messing around and I was about to paint when I noticed my poor little set of 7 india inks sitting completely alone and neglected. So I took them out and decided to test them. I am now in love. India inks are very similar to watercolor. They're fairly transparent, vibrant, can be mixed with water and turned into a wash, however the have a very important quality that makes them shine for me: they're permanent. So you can thin them out and blend them with water, but as soon as they dry water doesn't reactivate them! So you know that muddy layering problem I was having with watercolor? All gone! I can even paint in shadows on a object in black or a dark color and then go over then with a completely different lighter color and the shadows stay put. It's gorgeous. I'm completely sold.
Right now I only have 7 colors: blue, red, yellow, green, magenta, brown and black. And with those colors I can mix pretty much whatever I want. But as soon as I can, I have every intention of getting the rest of the 17 colors in the set. These lovely little bottles are awesome. You just gotta make sure not to drip and or spill the into your carpet. Remember what I said about it being permanent once dry? Yea, that stuff ain't coming out. And I may or may not have already done that once... -_-
