So a while back when I was determined to figure out watercolors despite previous failed (horrendous) attempts at the media. I came across a couple youtube videos where people used india inks to paint their flash/paintings instead of watercolors. I didn't know much about them at the time and while I was busy buying some watercolor color pencils I went ahead and bought a Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India Inks set of 7 inks; a mouthful I know. Anyway, when my order came in I immediately took to the watercolor pencils. It seemed like the solution to all the troubles I had with watercolors in the pans or straight out of the tubes. I could just color normally and then go over with water to get the effect I was looking for.

I was pretty content with my watercolor pencils and I even managed two paintings with them: the King of New Orleans chest piece and the Skullflower painting. Now there were still things I didn't quite like about watercolor. The biggest thing that bothered me was that when you went over a base color with a new color the water in the new color reactivated the one you put down and they mixed. And the more you layered your colors the more you ended up with this muddy mix of colors instead of the layers shining through one another.

Well a little while ago I was messing around and I was about to paint when I noticed my poor little set of 7 india inks sitting completely alone and neglected. So I took them out and decided to test them. I am now in love. India inks are very similar to watercolor. They're fairly transparent, vibrant, can be mixed with water and turned into a wash, however the have a very important quality that makes them shine for me: they're permanent. So you can thin them out and blend them with water, but as soon as they dry water doesn't reactivate them! So you know that muddy layering problem I was having with watercolor? All gone! I can even paint in shadows on a object in black or a dark color and then go over then with a completely different lighter color and the shadows stay put. It's gorgeous. I'm completely sold.

Right now I only have 7 colors: blue, red, yellow, green, magenta, brown and black. And with those colors I can mix pretty much whatever I want. But as soon as I can, I have every intention of getting the rest of the 17 colors in the set. These lovely little bottles are awesome. You just gotta make sure not to drip and or spill the into your carpet. Remember what I said about it being permanent once dry? Yea, that stuff ain't coming out. And I may or may not have already done that once... -_-

For someone who calls herself Wings, I really suck at drawing them. It's sort of sad, really. I've been working on my new Skullflower Designs logo for a couple weeks now and very, very little progress has been made. And I haven't drawn, or colored, or painted ANYTHING else! I'm a little creatively blocked at the moment. I'm pretty close to throwing my pencils and artwork out the window! ARGH! *sigh* I'm a little stressed out right now if you can't tell. And stress has never really made a very good bedfellow for art and I. Since I finally got a good deal of my back pay I was considering buying myself some art supplies I've been gawking at for a while, but I almost feel like I don't deserve them right now. Why spend just under $100 on supplies? I'm obviously not doing anything with them right now. *headdesk*

I've been away for a little while I know. Those comments and watches have just been piling up while I was gone. I almost don't want to go through them all but I hate having a ungodly number of DA messages up there. Sorry for being gone everyone. But life has been just a little bit hectic. I'm in the processing of leaving one military job, transferring into another military job, and looking for a civilian job and the search just isn't going well. That's what happens when you live in a small town with a base connected to it. Way more people looking than there are jobs available.

A good thing about not working so much though is that I have been drawing quite a bit and getting my name out there for designing tattoos. I've actually had people come to me to design tattoos outside of the internet! I know right?! Mostly, because my wonderful husband keeps talking up my art to people he works with. I don't know what I would do without that man. :) But it's pretty cool. And it's definitely making me feel A LOT more confident in my art. And I certainly have nothing but time to draw right now.

So lately I've found that tracing my sketches onto another sheet of paper to ink and then color has been a tad bit difficult. I can never quite see the lines and it often causes me to mess up my lineart. So I looked into buying one and the price range for a nice one the size I need was a little disheartening. I don't have the money to spend on that right now. So after I looked up some DIY ones (and realized I don't have the skill to do that) I turned to my husband (who once did woodworking for a living) and I wasn't disappointed. My wonderful husband just spent the last couple hours MAKING me my very own light box! It's sitting on the kitchen table right now waiting for the epoxy glue to dry before I can paint it all black. But I now have my very own light box! And all the materials only cost us about $20! So score! I love my husband!
